How to Steward Our Deliverance and Walk in Freedom

Deliverance is not just about casting out demons and dealing with symptoms of spiritual oppression. It is about walking with individuals as they walk toward healing, restoration, and true freedom in Christ.

We will now examine how to continue walking in the freedom we have received through Jesus Christ. Both deliverance and discipleship are needed because freedom is a journey that starts with deliverance. Discipleship is a walk-out process with a mentor, accountability, and a prayer partner. It is essential to be part of a healthy community within the body of Christ.

Put on the armor of God and the armor of light daily  (Ephesians 6:10-18; Romans 13:12). Spend time with the Lord daily in His Word, praying, praising, and worshiping to develop an intimate relationship with Him. His Word will guide you on the right path and is for your benefit. Find Scriptures that specifically address areas where you were delivered. Confess what God’s Word says.

A significant part of deliverance is renewing the mind and demolishing strongholds (thought patterns) that will need dismantling over time. The battle begins in your mind. The Bible instructs us to replace thoughts that are contrary to God’s truth with His truth, taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. Most demons seeking to reenter will come against your thoughts. Refuse any negative thoughts from the enemy and replace them with thoughts that align with God’s Word.

We must not return to what opened us up to oppression (e.g., sexual immorality, idolatry, anger, pride, etc.). Remember that the enemy always tries to come back, and we need to know how to stand in our authority (Luke 10:19; 4:13; Matthew 12:44-45).

Guard against evil in what you see, hear, and say. For example, consider changing the TV or radio station, or the people you hang out with.

Crucify the flesh. If our fleshly appetites, desires, and lusts are not brought to the cross, it leaves an opening for demons to return. Please pay attention to states of being that make us more susceptible to the enemy and create opportunities for sin (e.g., exhaustion, hunger, anger, substance abuse, and disobedience). When we are angry, we can lose our ability to filter our thoughts and words. However, we can experience anger without sinning (Ephesians 4:26-27). We need inner strength from the Holy Spirit.

Choose to forgive everyone and refrain from taking offense. Commit yourself totally to Christ and abide in Him, allowing the fruit of the Spirit to come forth.

Walk in deliverance daily. If you become aware of any demonic activity in your life, seek the Lord or a deliverance minister for help with deliverance. Jesus makes complete deliverance possible. We can experience the perfect liberty that God intended for us. He didn’t create us to live in bondage. He did not intend for us to go from deliverance to deliverance, but from glory to glory, and to walk in victory.

Walk in the Spirit. The power to walk victoriously is available to every believer. It comes from the Holy Spirit, and we can experience the Holy Spirit’s power by being filled moment by moment as we yield to Him (Acts 1:4-5, 8; 2:1-4). Without His power, we will fail and fall back into bondage. We know this because the Bible tells us in 2 Corinthians 3:17 that there is liberty where the Spirit of the Lord is; therefore, only the Spirit sets people free and empowers them to walk in freedom.

Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. Galatians 5:1

“Therefore, if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”    John 8:36
