There can be some hindrances or roadblocks to receiving our healing, and I want to discuss a few I see in the Word and how to avoid them. Remember, we don’t merit or deserve healing based on our worthiness or righteousness. It is by the grace of God through Jesus and His finished work on the cross (i.e., faith in His blood and His righteousness that He gave us). Healing is the children’s bread, and we have a legal right to it through the New Covenant (1 John 1:9; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Matthew 15:26; Hebrews 8:6; 12:24; 13:20).
Hindrances to Healing
1) Unbelief, or Lack of Faith in God and His Word, Doubt, Lack of Knowledge
We receive everything from God by grace through faith. Faith begins where the will of God is known. Doubt concerning God’s will to heal you will be a hindrance.
Faith is built and grows out of and through the Word of God. The Word is like a seed, and it is unlocked when it is planted in our hearts and allowed to grow (Luke 8:11-15). Our seed of faith increases and grows every time we take the Word of God into our hearts, believe it, confess it, and act on it. As we grow in the authority and power of the Spirit to speak to rooted things, we will see them dislodged and removed as doubts, fears, and unbelief disappear, faith taking more and more of our hearts.
The growth of our faith is proportional to the time we spend developing it. Our faith will continue to grow until it becomes as large as it needs to be to overcome sickness and see healing manifest in our lives.
Satan will try to get us to second-guess God’s Word by planting doubt. He generally tries to strike when we are feeling weak or tired. But sometimes, he plays the opposite game of attacking us when we feel strong.
Faith is rooted in the Rhema Word of Christ (Romans 10:17). Therefore, we need to ask the Holy Spirit to give us the Word we need for each day and every season of our lives. When we don’t know what the Word of God says, we lack knowledge and the wisdom of how to apply it to our lives, and then the enemy tries to destroy us.
We must make God’s Word the final authority in our lives and refuse to believe what we see and feel in the physical realm. The most important thing is to immerse yourself in the Word of God and exercise your faith. Start at whatever level you can believe and continue in the Word, confessing it and exercising your faith. Your faith will grow!
When we read, meditate on, and confess the Word of God aloud, we follow the principle of faith laid out for us in Romans 10:17 and Mark 11:22-24. According to Mark 11:23, mountain-moving faith won’t work unless you release it with the words of your mouth!
I encourage you to fill your heart with the Word of God, strengthening and empowering your faith to see the healing and miracles you need. Read healing Scriptures out loud to yourself so you can continually hear yourself confess the Word of God and begin to expect to see your healing manifested!
If we confess weakness, failure, and sickness, we destroy faith and speak curses over ourselves. But faith grows as we understand the Word, agree with it, and confess it. Speak words of life!
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit. Proverbs 18:21
A point of contact helps release our faith in God, such as the laying on of hands, anointing with oil, prayer cloths, participating in Holy Communion, and worship. Never underestimate the importance of praise. It’s one of the most potent spiritual weapons we have. Praise and worship bring the presence of God Himself, and His power is present to heal.
Reach out and touch Him by faith and receive your healing. God can use any method to heal anyone who reaches out to Him in faith. Faith moves the hand of God! But we must keep our eyes on Him as the Healer and not on the delivery system or point of contact that carries God’s healing power to us. God is the source of all healing!
Refuse doubt and unbelief. Healing is all about what Jesus has paid for and done. When we don’t see healing manifested in us right away, we may think that we haven’t done enough or done the right things to get our breakthrough. However, it is not about our performance, merit, or work. Jesus has already done the work and wants us to come as we are. He loves us and wants to heal us.
Doubt about not having enough faith will be a hindrance. Jesus worked with whatever faith all who came to Him had and healed them. The only place where He couldn’t do any miracles was in His hometown because of their unbelief (Matthew 13:58).
Confessions to Build Our Faith
- I walk by faith, not by sight.
- I am not moved by what I see, feel, or experience. I have the God kind of faith. God’s Word is in my heart and my mouth. I have spoken my faith, and I believe I received my healing. Even if I haven’t yet seen the physical results, I know I have them and am unmoved by negative circumstances.
- I hear, study, believe, and confess God’s Word, and my faith continues to grow. I abide in God, and His Word abides in me. So, I ask for what I need according to His Word, and I believe I receive it by faith.
- Jesus is the author and finisher of my faith, so I look to Him by believing and acting on His Word, and I do what He tells me to do. I believe that my faith works because I believe God’s Word is true, and it comes to pass.
When you speak these confessions to build your faith regularly, you will begin to renew your mind to the truth in God’s Word and see a change in your life. Don’t let the enemy have the last word; speak the Word of God – speak faith!
2) Faulty Belief System Contrary to the Truth of God’s Word
Any belief system that doesn’t agree with God in Word, nature, or character is ungodly and can hinder our healing. Strongholds are set up in our minds when our ungodly beliefs combine with the demonic. The power of the Lord Jesus Christ can break these strongholds of ungodly beliefs. We must identify and acknowledge these ungodly beliefs (lies), disassociate ourselves from them, ask for forgiveness, and cultivate godly beliefs.
3) Unforgiveness, Offense, and Judgments
Unforgiveness causes us to live out of our pain and ungodly beliefs, which limit us. It affects our health, relationships, and ability to experience the abundant life Christ came to give us. Forgiveness may involve a process that also allows our souls to be healed. However, we can choose to forgive and allow the Holy Spirit to continue working in us. We may also need to go and ask for forgiveness for something we did (Matthew 5:23-24).
The release of offense frees us to receive God’s blessing. Physical, emotional, and spiritual healing occur when we relinquish hate or the judgment of another person. Judgment hinders our lives and prayers. A critical factor for emotional health is not judging others (Matthew 7:1-2).
Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any unforgiveness or offense in your heart, then choose to forgive by grace through faith. It is an act of your will. He will help you and walk you through the process of healing any wounds in your soul. Don’t let unforgiveness or offense rob you of your healing and become a root of bitterness that keeps you in bondage.
4) Spiritual Oppression or Demonic Influences
We see in the Gospels that demonic oppression or influence causes some sicknesses. So when we see that sickness is an oppression from the devil, there is a spiritual component to sickness and disease.
A born-again Christian can’t be demon-possessed because the Holy Spirit of God takes residence in their spirit or heart when Jesus becomes their Lord and Savior. However, even Christians can be oppressed or influenced by the enemy and under spiritual attack.
Suppose there is an open door for the enemy to influence your life. In that case, it will require repentance and deliverance to shut the door, allowing you to receive the healing you need.
Any place where the enemy has a legal right to afflict sickness and disease will hinder healing. Because the enemy is a thief and robber, we should first take authority, operate in faith, and release the anointing and power of God for healing to flow.
If we don’t see any improvement, the sickness may be a result of a legal issue such as personal sin, bloodline iniquity, and generational covenants with demonic powers. We then need to ask the Spirit of God to reveal to us what claim the enemy might use to bring sickness upon us. We can then approach God’s throne of grace to address and remove this legal issue so that God’s resurrection life can flow and bring healing to our bodies and souls.
We take action by repenting for our personal sins and the sins of our ancestors, breaking generational curses, and declaring that the blood of Jesus cancels these claims. Remember that Jesus became a curse for us, and His blood cleanses us from all sin.
We use our spiritual authority to revoke any legal claims of the adversary. Then we speak healing directly, not just praying and asking God for healing, but commanding healing with confidence, based on the finished work of the cross and the authority we have in the name of Jesus and His blood.
We must address root issues such as unforgiveness, generational patterns, and spiritual agreements established in our bloodline. We receive healing by believing it is our covenant right to be healed, removing the legal barriers, and accepting God’s healing presence.
The key is understanding that Jesus has already legally defeated sickness, and we can now enforce this victory by addressing spiritual legal claims that block our healing.
Repent, Renounce, and Cast Out the Spirit of Infirmity
- Forgive me, Heavenly Father. I repent for my sins and the sins of my ancestors for allowing any fear, guilt, rejection, self-rejection, hatred, self-hatred, unforgiveness, offense, bitterness, sin, pride, judgment, anger, idolatry, rebellion, witchcraft, or the occult to open the door to any sickness or infirmity in my life. I choose to forgive all those who have hurt me and place them into Your hands.
- I renounce these things and for partnering with the spirit of infirmity and any unclean spirits in the name of Jesus. I cast out any spirit of infirmity that came into my life through these open doors, or trauma or accidents, in the name of Jesus. I close all doors to any spirit causing sickness or infirmity now in the name of Jesus. (Pause and EXHALE)
- In the name of Jesus, I break and destroy every curse of infirmity, sickness, and premature death off of my body. In the name of Jesus, I break and destroy every curse of witchcraft and destruction over my body from both sides of my family. I command all hereditary spirits of sickness to come out in the name of Jesus. (Pause and EXHALE)
- I rebuke and cast out all spirits causing cancer and tumors, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart and vascular diseases, kidney and urinary system diseases, liver diseases, blood diseases, respiratory diseases, digestive diseases, reproductive diseases, skin diseases, muscle, bone, and skeletal diseases, arthritis and all inflammatory diseases, endocrine and autoimmune diseases, thoughts of suicide, brain, neurological and nervous system diseases, including Alzheimer’s, dementia, depression, or insomnia in the name of Jesus. (Pause and EXHALE)
- I am redeemed from sickness and disease. In the name of Jesus, I speak to every sickness in my body, and I command it to leave. I loose myself from every infirmity. (EXHALE)
- Fill me with Your Holy Spirit in every place where the enemy has left. Thank You, Lord, for my healing and deliverance!
Maintaining Our Healing
We must stand against the devil’s strategies. The devil (our enemy) will take any opportunity to steal our healing or the Word from our hearts. So we must keep our shields of faith high by putting on or standing in God’s armor daily to stand against the devil’s wiles (Ephesians 6:10-18).
We should not be ignorant of the enemy’s devices (2 Corinthians 2:11). The enemy will attempt to counterattack and reclaim the ground we have just gained regarding our healing (Luke 4:13).
Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. James 4:7
The devil is a deceiver who requires man’s permission and cooperation to operate (see Genesis 3). The enemy has no legal right to destroy a believer without the believer’s consent. But he is also a thief and a robber and will try to attack us illegally, so we need to use the authority Christ has given us to defeat him. (My testimony about 1st word of knowledge and prophecy, where the enemy was trying to destroy me, but God said he couldn’t because I was His daughter and He had me in His right hand)
Satan is not God, so he is not omnipotent, omniscient, or omnipresent. He schemes, cheats, and tries to outwit, take advantage of, and defraud us, specifically through deception (Ephesians 6:11; 2 Thessalonians 2:9-10). His deception lures us from standing upon what Christ has done and believing in God for our healing.
The enemy attempts to weaken and wear us out by using delays to make us quit before our breakthrough. He will also use distraction to divert our focus from God and His Word, and use disappointment to magnify weaknesses in others, leading to offense and bitterness. So, don’t allow the enemy access through unforgiveness, judgmentalism, strife, pride, anger, and other similar attitudes.
For long-term healing to occur, we must address the root cause, including offering and receiving forgiveness, not taking offense, and managing disappointment (we must live in hope). In addition, we may need to deal with emotional wounds and any demonic influences to close their door of operation. Finally, we must also steward our body, the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).
Jesus is our Healer and the author and finisher of our faith, so we must keep our eyes on Him. We must stay in the Word even when we are well. Taking Holy Communion puts us in remembrance of the finished work of the cross. Jesus has already defeated the enemy, and we are seated with Christ in heavenly places at the right hand of the Father, a place of victory (Colossians 2:15; 3:1).
