A name represents the person or who they are. For example, Jesus means “Savior.” When you get Jesus as Savior, you get Him and everything He is and came to provide for you. Therefore, His name represents His attributes and character! (Check out this document “Names and Titles of Jesus” under my website menu at https://alexiscarucci.com).
His name comes from the Hebrew word Yeshua from which we get the English name, Joshua. I want to encourage you to search the Scriptures for every place where it mentions “in Him,” “in Christ,” “in whom,” and “in His name” to find out all that He has given you. The name of Jesus carries His power and is above every name, so every other name must bow to Him!
Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven and of those on earth, and of those under the earth. Philippians 2:9-10
Some praise and worship songs declare the name of Jesus as sweet, beautiful, wonderful, excellent, holy, and powerful. There is salvation and life in the name of Jesus (Acts 4:12; Romans 10:13; John 20:31). Jesus invited and instructed us to use His name to heal the sick, cast out demons and every work of the enemy in our lives and those around us.
“And these signs will follow those who believe: in My name, they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” Mark 16:17 – 18
After Jesus ascended to the Father in heaven, the disciples used His name as He instructed them, with great signs and wonders following (Acts 3:1-16). People’s lives were dramatically changed for the better, but the religious leaders of their day threatened them not to use the name of Jesus because they did not believe in Him as the Son of God.
“But so that it spreads no further among the people, let us severely threaten them, that from now on they speak to no man in this name.” So they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge.” Acts 4:17 – 19
Jesus told us to pray to the Father using His name and promises we would have incredible results! When we pray in His name, we identify with the person of Jesus Christ and His authority (John 15:16). Our authority rests with our submission to Him, and when we pray in faith using His name, heaven backs us, and our prayers are answered. You can’t separate faith from humility and submission because submission is a big part of faith! We are representing Him and His interests here on the earth. Jesus represents God the Father, so prayer activates the power of God into a life or situation (John 10:30).
“And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.” John 14:13 – 14
“And in that day, you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name, He will give you. Until now, you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.” John 16:23 – 24
The Holy Spirit was sent in Jesus’ name (John 14:26). Jesus transferred His authority to us and gave us power through the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:18 – 20; Luke 10:19; Acts 2). He wants us to use His name (see the book of Acts). The name of Jesus is mighty and will defeat every enemy in our lives. Declare who He is over you and your circumstances. Activate His name and use it!
